NEET and JEE exams has become a centre of latest fight between the Centre and states. National Testing Agency (NTA) has maiained that JEE-Main, NEET-UG exams to be held as per schedule in September but opposition Chief Ministers are planning to move Supreme Court against its order for holding JEE and NEET examinations and appeal for its postponement if the Centre is unwilling to do so.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that state governments are being "bulldozed" and their rights are being curtailed by the Centre in the name of cooperative federalism.Banerjee said aspiring students will face enormous trouble due to the ongoing restrictions across the country and requested opposition chief ministers to move together to the apex court.Blaming the Centre for announcing the exam dates amidst the ongoing pandemic and restrictions due to it, she said the students are facing a lot of hardships as travel by air and roads are yet to resume fully."Students are facing a lot of hardships and the decision by the Centre will harm the students during the pandemic,She said.
On the other hand,NTA has also written to the State Governments to extend support in local movement of the candidates so that they are able to reach their examination centres on time. JEE-Mains exam is scheduled to be held from 1st September to 6th September while NEET-UG will be held on 13th September this year.In order to meet the social distancing requirements due to Covid-19 pandemic the number of Examination Centers have been increased from 570 to 660 in case of JEE-Mains and from 2 thousand 546 to 3 thousand 843 for NEET-UG 2020. Additionally, in case of JEE-Mains, the number of shifts have been increased from 8 to 12. Number of candidates per shift has also been reduced from 1 lakh 32 thousand to 85 thousand.This year nearly 8 lakh 50 thousand candidates have registered for JEE-Mains while the number of registrations for NEET-UG has been nearly 16 lakhs.NTA said in a statement that It the attempt is "to save one academic year".
Chief Ministers of Punjab, Maharashtra, Rajasthan , Chhattisgarh and Puduchery are reportedly against holding the NEET and JEE tests. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also wants postponment.
