Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni claimed the fight was "not on an equal footing". "I do not agree with the IOC," Meloni said during a meeting with Italian athletes at the Games. "I think that athletes who have male genetic characteristics should not be admitted to women's competitions," she added.
The International Olympic Committee allowed two boxers, who failed the gender eligibility tests for the World Boxing Championships, to be made eligible to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics.Last year, the Algerian boxer was disqualified hours before her gold medal match at the women's World Championships in Delhi. Algerian media reported that Khelif was disqualified for a high level of testosterone in her system.Earlier, the Algerian Olympic Committee issued a statement criticising the “lies, unethical targeting and maligning” of esteemed athlete - Khelif.
The International Olympic Committee extended its support to Khelif and Lin Yu in the women's competition at the Paris Games after the boxers failed gender eligibility tests last year. IOC spokesman Mark Adams told reporters. "They are women in their passports and it's stated that is the case, and they are female. These athletes have competed many times before for many years. They haven't just suddenly arrived," he added. Lin Yu will have her first bout under the 57kg division on Saturday.
