Clashes and fires broke out in Paris after PSG’s win over Arsenal

In France, dozens of football fans were arrested in central Paris on Saturday night  as thousands of supporters went on the rampage following PSG’s victory against Arsenal in the Champions League final. Rioting broke out as early as the first half of the crunch match, which the London club agonisingly lost on penalties as the game slowly slipped out of their grasp. The worst trouble was in the Chatelet area of the city, between Notre Dame Cathedral and the Louvre museum. The French Interior Ministry said at least 326 people were arrested nationwide. Some 235 of those were taken into custody in Paris.
“The trouble started as soon as Arsenal went one-nil up,” said an onlooker. “Chairs and bottles were thrown at the police, who then moved in to make arrests.” Two dozen flares and about 100 fireworks were seized Saturday, while a bus shelter was destroyed near the Champs-Elysees avenue. Police said a bakery and a restaurant were damaged near PSG's Parc des Princes stadium, where tens of thousands gathered inside to watch the match but 4,000- 5,000 people loitered outside with projectiles were thrown at officers. About 150 people "attempted to enter through one of the gates" at the stadium but police pushed them back, a police spokesperson said.

According to Paris police, 79 people were detained in the city, of whom 45 were taken into custody. Six vehicles and two businesses were damaged. A police officer was also injured. Some 22,000 police were deployed across France for the game, including 8,000 in Paris.Paris tram lines were halted, several metro stations shut and bus traffic halted in places in bid to minimise disturbances. Football violence is becoming an increasing problem across France.
French far-right parliamentarian and former presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, meanwhile, said "only in France does the victory of the a football club spark riots. Only in France does everyone feel compelled to to lock themselves in their homes on a night of victory to avoid being confronted with violence."
