Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath is emerging as a likely Congress candidate for the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh as the term of senior party leader Digvijaya Singh comes to an end in April.Digvijaya Singh, who has been serving in the Upper House since 2014, has indicated that he will not seek another term, paving the way for the Congress to nominate a new face from the state. Party circles suggest that Kamal Nath’s experience, both as a former Chief Minister and a senior national leader, places him among the frontrunners for the nomination.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India on Wednesday issued the notification for elections to 37 Rajya Sabha seats across the country, with polling and counting of votes scheduled for March 16. The terms of these 37 members are set to expire in April.“Adequate measures for close monitoring of the election process by appointing observers shall be taken to ensure free and fair election,” the notification stated.
Among the members whose terms are ending, seven are from Maharashtra, six from Tamil Nadu, five each from West Bengal and Bihar, four from Odisha, three from Assam, two each from Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Telangana, and one from Himachal Pradesh.Notable leaders whose tenures will lapse include Sharad Pawar, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Ramdas Athawale, Saket Gokhale and Upendra Kushwaha.In Madhya Pradesh, political attention is now focused on who the Congress will field as its candidate. With Kamal Nath’s stature within the party and his continued influence in state politics, his name is being widely discussed ahead of the nomination process.The Congress leadership is expected to take a final call in the coming days as the Rajya Sabha election schedule gathers momentum.
