Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra qualified for the final of the men's javelin final with the best throw of 86.65m javelin throw qualification in group A contest on Wednesday. Competing in his first Olympics, the 23-year-old Chopra took just a few seconds to make to the final round to be held on Saturday as he sent the spear well past the qualifying mark of 83.50m in his first attempt. Only three athletes have qualified automatically from Group A. The throwers are India's Neeraj Chopra with a throw of 86.65m, The automatic qualifying mark is 83.50m or the 12 best throwers will advance to the final. This was Chopra's seventh best throw and third best of the season 2021
Germany's Johannes Vetter, favourite to win the gold, qualified in his third attempt with an effort of 85.64m. Finland's Lassi Etelatalo is the third automatic qualification with a throw of 84.50m. Johannes Vetter tipped to be the favourite to win the event, has been in supreme touch. He is the only man in the world to have thrown beyond 90.00 in the past 24 months. He has done so 18 times in competitions, including a record streak of seven competitions between April and June this year.
Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar beats Georgi Vangelov of Bulgaria, advances to the semi-final in Men's Freestyle 57kg by technical superiority (14-4). Deepak Punia won against Ekerekeme Agiomor of Nigeria 12-1 in men's Freestyle 86kg wrestling 1/8 Final to advance. In women's wrestling, India's Anshu Malik lost her bout to Iryna Kurachkina of Belarus 8-2 in Freestyle 57kg 1/8 Final.
