The Shree Somnath Temple, a living symbol of India’s ancient cultural heritage and spiritual legacy, is globally revered as a centre of faith and devotion. Beyond worship and darshan, the sacred dham has emerged as a powerful platform for women’s empowerment, setting an inspiring example of social responsibility and inclusive growth through the initiatives of the Somnath Temple Trust. At present, the Somnath Temple Trust has a total workforce of 906 employees, of which 262 are women. Their active participation across temple management, service activities and daily operations reflects the Trust’s strong commitment to equal opportunity and inclusive development. Women contribute a unique blend of sensitivity, discipline and dedication to the smooth functioning of the temple ecosystem. In total, 363 women receive direct employment through the Somnath Temple Trust, collectively generating an estimated annual income of around Rs. 9 crore. This financial independence has significantly improved their standard of living and strengthened their role in the socio-economic development of the region.
Women play a central role in several key temple services. A total of 252 women are effectively serving in various roles within the Trust. The sacred Bilva Van within the temple premises is managed entirely by women, with 16 women overseeing its upkeep, environmental conservation, cleanliness and sanctity. This initiative stands as a strong example of women-led management and responsibility. In addition, 55 women are engaged in the distribution of prasad, while 35 women serve devotees in the temple’s Bhojanalya (dining hall), ensuring that the tradition of seva and hospitality continues with devotion and care.
A New Chapter of Faith and Women Empowerment
From the sanctum to the temple flag, and from the Bilva Van to the Vastra Prasad initiative, women empowerment has taken centre stage at Somnath. From this sacred land of Shree Somnath Mahadev, a new chapter of belief, self-reliance and women-led development is being written.Under the Vastra Prasad initiative, local women creatively convert the sacred yellow cloths (pitambar) offered to Mahadev into beautifully designed kurtas worn by devotees across India and abroad. What was once a symbol of devotion has now become a source of sustainable livelihood, transforming rural women into ‘Lakhpati Didis’.

In the presence of the first Jyotirlinga, lives are being transformed with divine blessings. The Somnath Temple Trust gives priority to local women in activities ranging from sanctum-related services to prasad preparation and vastra initiatives, ensuring community participation and empowerment. The initiative reflects the vision of Shree Somnath Trust Chairman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to transform ‘women power’ into ‘national power’. It also builds on Somnath’s long-standing tradition of social responsibility, where sacred garments offered to Shree Somnath Mahadev and Mata Parvati were earlier distributed to those in need, carrying a message of compassion and faith.
By linking devotion with livelihood, the Trust has brought to life the Prime Minister’s ‘Lakhpati Didi’ vision, aimed at raising the annual income of rural women beyond one lakh rupees. Through this initiative, faith and self-reliance are seamlessly woven together.Local women skillfully design the vastra prasad kurtas with vibrant colours, designer collars and back prints featuring sacred symbols such as the damru, trishul and temple shikhar. These garments blend spiritual essence with contemporary fashion, making them popular among devotees.Women associated with the initiative express newfound confidence and pride. “Our handmade kurtas, carrying the blessings of Shree Somnath, reach devotees across the country. This thought fills us with immense pride,” they say.The Trust has ensured that the vastra prasad reaches a wide audience through its official website, with kurtas being delivered to metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, as well as overseas destinations. This has significantly enhanced incomes while giving national and global visibility to the craftsmanship of rural women. In addition, Shree Somnath Trust conducts specialised training programmes to further enhance the skills of women, ensuring long-term sustainability and growth.Through these initiatives, the Shree Somnath Temple Trust has created a model that blends spiritual heritage with social responsibility, spreading the essence of self-confidence, self-respect and self-reliance from the sacred land of Somnath far and wide.
