India and Slovakia on Monday elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Partnership and signed a series of agreements spanning digital technologies, education, research, labour mobility, culture and critical infrastructure protection during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bratislava. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico held wide-ranging talks covering the full spectrum of bilateral relations and agreed to establish a Joint Working Group (JWG) on counter-terrorism to strengthen cooperation in addressing evolving security challenges.
According to a Joint Statement issued after the meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation in combating terrorism, including within the framework of the United Nations.“The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation in counterterrorism, including within the framework of the United Nations, and called for strong and decisive action against terrorists and terrorist entities, including those designated by the United Nations Security Council 1267 Sanctions Committee, as well as their affiliates, proxies, sponsors, financiers and supporters,” the statement said.

According to agency reports,following the talks, the two sides exchanged Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on cooperation in Digital Technologies, Labour Migration, Higher Education and Research, Audio-Visual Creation, Quantum Communication and Critical Infrastructure Protection.An MoU was also signed between the National Institute of Naturopathy, Pune, under the Ministry of Ayush, and Slovak Health Spa Piestany to promote cooperation in wellness and traditional healthcare practices.
In the education sector, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and the Slovak Technical University finalised an agreement to enhance collaboration in student exchange programmes, scholarships and joint research initiatives.The two countries also agreed to establish the first-ever ICCR Chair in Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Kosice, a move aimed at strengthening academic and technological cooperation in emerging fields. Agreements were also reached to promote tourism cooperation through collaboration between tour operator associations of both countries.
Further expanding scientific collaboration, the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) concluded an agreement on scientific cooperation, paving the way for joint research and knowledge exchange.Announcing the elevation of ties, Prime Minister Modi described the development as a landmark moment in bilateral relations“Held an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Fico. This is indeed a very special moment for the India-Slovakia friendship. Considering the strong potential of our ties, we have elevated our relations to a Comprehensive Partnership,” Modi said in a post on X.The Prime Minister also expressed confidence that the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement would further strengthen economic engagement between the two countries.“The India-EU Free Trade Agreement will also add momentum to our partnership,” he said.

The two leaders also reviewed growing people-to-people ties and acknowledged the increasing movement of students, professionals and travellers between the two countries. To facilitate consular cooperation, India and Slovakia agreed to establish a mechanism for regular consultations between their respective consular authorities.
