Several Gujarat districts on flash flood alert as heavy rain batters state

Several districts across Gujarat have been placed under a moderate flash flood risk alert after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heavy rainfall that could trigger surface runoff and inundation in low-lying areas over the next 24 hours.According to information, the alert, issued by the IMD's Hydromet Division's Flash Flood Guidance Cell, remains in effect until 11:30 am on Wednesday. Districts under the flash flood warning include Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Botad, Bhavnagar, Kheda, Anand, Vadodara, Panchmahal, Bharuch, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Dang, Navsari, Surat, Tapi and Valsad.
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall over already saturated catchments could lead to surface runoff, waterlogging and inundation in vulnerable and low-lying areas. The weather department's Ahmedabad centre has also issued an orange alertfor Dang, Navsari and Valsad on Wednesday, while Dahod, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Chhota Udepur, Amreli and Bhavnagar remain under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall. Most other districts are expected to witness moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of up to 40-50 kmph.
With the state on high alert, Gujarat Minister-in-charge for Amreli and Rajkot districts, Jitu Vaghani, held a virtual review meeting with officials from Amreli, Rajkot and Bhavnagar on Tuesday. He directed district administrations to maintain continuous monitoring of dam safety and overflowing rivers while ensuring that officials from the power, water supply, irrigation and roads departments remain on standby to restore essential services in the event of rain-related disruptions. Authorities were also instructed to reinspect dilapidated buildings and hoardings and remove unsafe structures immediately.
Amreli district has received an average of 12 inches of rainfall this monsoon, more than 42 per cent of its seasonal average, including over two inches in the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning. Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in the district, where 76 people have been rescued and 641 relocated so far this monsoon.Bhavnagar has recorded around eight inches of rainfall this season, accounting for over 30 per cent of its seasonal average, with more than three inches falling in the last 24 hours. One NDRF team has been stationed in the district. In a recent rescue operation, eight people from Ahmedabad were safely rescued after their car was swept away by the swollen Malan River near Otha village in Mahuva taluka. The district has identified 982 shelters to accommodate evacuees during heavy rainfall.
Rajkot has received over five inches of rainfall this monsoon, or more than 18 per cent of its seasonal average, while less than an inch of rain was recorded in the past 24 hours. One NDRF team and one State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team have been deployed for emergency response.

In Ahmedabad, a garbage collection dumper slipped into a section of road that caved in near Vaishali Township on Tuesday. No injuries were reported. Officials of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said a crack in an underground utility line may have caused the cave-in, with the exact reason to be determined after a detailed technical inspection. The city recorded an average rainfall of 17.87 mm on Tuesday, with Makhtampura, Kotarpur, Sardarnagar, Naroda and Chandkheda among the areas receiving the highest rainfall.
