Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a joint session of the Indonesian Parliament in Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon. Highlighting the growing partnership between the two nations, Modi said India and Indonesia have immense opportunities to deepen cooperation across a wide range of sectors. He noted that when India and Indonesia stand together, they reinforce the world’s faith that democracy creates opportunities and builds trust. The Prime Minister said history will be made when India’s 140 crore people and Indonesia’s 29 crore people move forward together in pursuit of shared progress. The Prime Minister said India and Indonesia are working closely to counter terrorism through the Joint Working Group mechanism. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific and stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the region. Modi also said that reforms of the United Nations Security Council can no longer be delayed. He added that India is ready to extend its support to Indonesia in the field of satellite launch technology.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the address as a historic milestone in bilateral relations. In a post on X, Jaiswal said, “A historic address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Parliament of Indonesia, the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister. Highlighting the enduring civilisational bonds and shared democratic values linking India and Indonesia, the Prime Minister called for a future-oriented partnership aligned with the aspirations of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Golden Indonesia 2045. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to working with Indonesia to further deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, strengthen the voice of the Global South and advance a free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific. The Prime Minister called for a new beginning in India-Indonesia relations based on the Ganga-Mahakam Vision for bilateral engagement.”
