State-owned gas utility GAIL (India) Ltd will invest ₹1,736.25 crore to set up a 178.2 megawatt (MW) wind power project in Maharashtra, expanding its renewable energy portfolio as part of its plan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2035.In a regulatory filing, the company said its board approved the investment at a recent meeting held. The wind power project is scheduled to be completed within 24 months from the award of the contract.With the addition of 178.2 MW, GAIL’s renewable energy capacity will see a significant boost. The company currently has 117.95 MW of installed wind power capacity across various states. Its existing wind projects are located in Gujarat (19.2 MW), Karnataka (38.1 MW), and Tamil Nadu (60.65 MW).In addition to wind energy, GAIL operates 27 MW of solar power projects spread across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
The new project forms part of the company’s broader strategy to ramp up renewable energy capacity and reduce its carbon footprint. According to information available on its website, GAIL has set a target to achieve net-zero emissions by reducing Scope-1 and Scope-2 emissions by 2035 and Scope-3 emissions by 2040. To meet this goal, the company plans to scale up its renewable energy capacity to 3.4 gigawatts (GW) by 2035.Beyond wind and solar energy, GAIL is also investing in emerging clean energy segments such as green hydrogen and compressed biogas (CBG) projects, aligning its operations with India’s national energy transition goals.GAIL is India’s largest natural gas transmission and marketing company, operating an extensive pipeline network of about 18,001 km across the country. Besides being the leading gas marketer, it also manages a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) portfolio and operates two petrochemical plants at Pata in Uttar Pradesh and one in Assam.
