The Election Commission has suspended IPS officer Vivek Sahay, director of security for Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, with immediate effect. The charges must be framed against him within a week for grossly failing in discharge of his primary duty as Director Security to protect the Z+ protectee, the Election Commission said. The Commission also said that the incedent was an accident not attack. Security was "not properly handled" and the Chief Minister's security protocol was violated, the Commission said.
Mamata Banerjee, who has Z-Plus security, has to travel in a bullet-proof car, but she was not. Instead, the security in-charge was sitting in the bullet-proof car, the Commission said. The EC has further directed Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay to post IPS officer Vivek Sahay immediately, after consulting with the DGP and following the extant procedure. The posting order has to be submitted to the EC latest by 1 pm Monday.In addition, the EC has also placed Purbi Medinipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Pravin Prakash under suspension.
