India were 39 for one at Stumps and need 381 more runs to win.India had a shaky start to their second inning on Day 4 of the first Test match, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, in Chennai on Monday. In reply to a target of 420 runs, the hosts have lost opener Rohit Sharma to Jack Leach. Sharma could only muster 12 runs. The visitors wrapped up their second innings after scoring 178 runs, with their first innings score of 578. Joe Root was the top performer for England, scoring 40 off 32 deliveries. Ravichandran Ashwin was on fire for India, taking six wickets, which included the dismissals of Rory Burns (0), Dom Sibley (16), Ben Stokes (7), Dom Bess (25), Jofra Archer (5) and James Anderson (0). Shahbaz Nadeem also took two wickets, meanwhile Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah took a wicket each. The hosts have a huge task on hand, and need to score 420 runs. They will be aiming to put in a good start and not lose a lot of wickets.
Earlier, India were all out on 337 against the disciplined pace and spin attack of England. Most of the Indian batsmen essayed ill-advised shots and allowed the visitors to take upper hand on a placid track. For England, ageless warrior James Anderson and Jofra Archer claimed two wickets each. Surprisingly two spinners Jack Leach and Beas bagged six priced scalps on a wicket which was not helping slow bowlers.Despite leading by 242 runs, the visitors did not impose follow on but the huge lead may be a match decider as one and a half days are still left in the test.
