Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has filed a Rs 500 crore defamation suit against Congress leaders over what he termed “false and malicious” allegations made at a recent press conference, including claims that he and his family occupied large tracts of land across the state. Senior Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi has been named in defamation suit. The development comes after Gogoi, who is the Assam Congress president, claimed last week that a probe by the party revealed that almost 12,000 bighas of land were occupied by Sarma and his family members across the state.Hours after the charges were made, the Assam Chief Minister announced that he would file a defamation case for making claims without any evidence.

Sarma further posted, "The era of hit-and-run politics is over. If they have even an ounce of courage or evidence, let them prove every allegation before a court of law." In another press conference on Monday, Gogoi had also accused the chief minister of "inciting genocide" against Muslims through his videos.
