Five people were found dead after a massive fire broke out on Thursday at vaccine-maker Serum Institute of India's Pune facility, at a building that is under construction. A few more trapped in the building were rescued. The fire is now under control. Ten fire tenders and a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were rushed to the spot to douse the fire that broke out in the after noon. The cause of the fire at the Serum Institute plant is not yet known. Serum CEO Adar Poonawalla has offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the departed.
Manjari, the complex where the fire broke out, is a few minutes' drive from the facility where the Covid vaccines are produced, sources said. It is believed to be part of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's office tweeted he was in touch with the Pune Municipal Commissioner for "complete on-ground updates."
