The Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the state budget for the financial year 2026–27, approving a total appropriation of Rs1.87 lakh crore aimed at driving inclusive growth and strengthening the state’s economic framework.Replying to the debate on the Appropriation Bill, Finance Minister O. P. Choudhary said the budget has been crafted in line with the aspirations of nearly three crore citizens. He emphasized that the government’s focus is on ensuring that welfare schemes reach the last mile while building a robust economic foundation.
According to information, the total outlay includes loan repayments and adjustments, with the net budget size estimated at Rs1.72 lakh crore. Choudhary said the budget is aligned with the long-term goal of transforming Chhattisgarh into a developed state by 2047.A key highlight of the budget is its framework built around the seven pillars of “SANKALP” — Samaveshi Vikas (inclusive growth), Adhosanrachna (infrastructure), Nivesh (investment), Kushal Manav Sansadhan (skilled human resources), Antyoday (upliftment of the last person), livelihood generation, and policy implementation.
To support these priorities, the government has announced five new Chief Minister-led missions with a combined allocation of Rs 500 crore. These initiatives will focus on artificial intelligence development, sports excellence, tourism promotion, infrastructure expansion, and startup and skill development.Highlighting the state’s economic performance, Choudhary noted that Chhattisgarh recorded a growth rate of 8.11% in 2025–26, surpassing the national average of 7.4%.
Agriculture and farmer welfare remain at the forefront, with Rs10,000 crore allocated to the ‘Krishak Unnati Yojana’, the largest component of the budget. The minister said the state’s procurement of paddy at Rs3,100 per quintal has significantly boosted rural incomes and strengthened the local economy. On women’s empowerment, the government has earmarked Rs8,200 crore for the ‘Mahtari Vandan Yojana’, under which nearly 70 lakh women receive ₹1,000 per month. The state has also declared 2026 as “Mahtari Gaurav Year” to promote women’s dignity, safety, and self-reliance.
However, the budget discussion saw sharp criticism from the opposition. Leader of Opposition Charan Das Mahant alleged irregularities in paddy procurement, illegal land plotting, and deterioration in law and order. He also raised concerns over rising unemployment, claiming that many youths in the state are facing frustration due to lack of opportunities. Mahant further targeted the government over reported cases of illegal opium and cannabis cultivation, alleging such activities even in regions linked to CM Vishnu Deo Sai.Additionally, the Congress leader accused the government of allowing environmental degradation in the biodiversity-rich Hasdeo forest region due to coal mining activities.Following the debate, the House passed the budget, setting the stage for the state’s fiscal roadmap for the upcoming financial year.
