In poll bound Tamil Nadu, Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday reached Madurai and saw the Jallikattu, the state's traditional bull taming sport and celebrated Pongal. "It was quite a lovely experience to see Tamil culture, history in action. I'm happy that Jallikattu is being organised in a systematic and safe way that both the bull and the youngsters are safe and everybody is being taken care of,"Gandhi said. DMK's chief MK Stalin was also attended the event .Jallikattu has become the symbol of Tamil pride, especially after the huge controversy over the treatment of the bulls. Congress party tweet a massege of Rahul Gandhi.
I came to give them a message that nobody is going to suppress the Tamil spirit for the Tamil spirit cannot be suppressed and secondly suppressing the Tamil spirit is the worst thing that you can do for our country: Shri @RahulGandhi#VanakkamRahulGandhi pic.twitter.com/h2qJgQtPkR

In 2011, when the Congress-led UPA was in power at the Centre, the environment ministry under Jairam Ramesh had issued a notification banning the use of bulls as a performing animal. In 2014, the Supreme Court had banned the sport. But following massive protests, the state government restored it three years later with an amendment in the law relating to the prevention of cruelty to animals. The Congress party's manifesto for the 2016 Tamil Nadu election had promised a ban on the annual event if it came to power. The Narendra Modi government in January 2016 amended the 2011 notification of the environment ministry allowing both Jallikattu and the bullock cart race with certain conditions.
Rahul Gandhi's new move is being seen a U-turn on Congress stand on Jallikattu. Experts said that Rahul Gandhi is clearly attempting to send a signal to his party workers and the voters of Tamil Nadu that the Congress is way past its anti-Jallikattu stand and non-hesitant in supporting cultural practices of Tamil people. In Tamil Nadu , Congress has a poll alliance with the DMK.
