Former union minister and veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh died after a prolonged illness on Sunday morning at a hospital in New Delhi. He was 82.Jaswant Singh, a former Army officer, had been ill after a fall at his home in August 2014 and was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital. He had been in and out of the hospital since and was admitted again in June this year.
He was denied a Lok Sabha ticket of his choice from Barmer in Rajasthan. He contested the 2014 general election, which was his last as an independent, but lost. Singh was twice expelled from the party; in 2009, the parliamentary board of the BJP expelled him after his book Jinnah - India, Partition, Independence was published. He rejoined the party after 10 months, but faced a second expulsion in 2014 when he defied party orders and challenged the BJP’s decision of not fielding him as a contestant from Barmer. "Jaswant Singh passed away at 6:55 am on Sunday. He was admitted on June 25 and was being treated for Sepsis with Multiorgan Dysfunction Syndrome," the hospital said in a statement.
President Ram Nath Kovind said, "The demise of veteran soldier, outstanding parliamentarian, exceptional leader and intellectual Shri Jaswant Singh is distressing. He combined many difficult roles with ease and equanimity. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Jaswant Singh served India diligently and will be remembered for his "unique perspective on matters of politics and society". Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Twitter, said he was "deeply pained" and the seasoned BJP leader will remembered for "his intellectual capabilities and stellar record in service to the nation".Home Minister Amit Shah condoled the death of Jaswant Singh and said it is an "irreparable loss for the country". Union ministers Smriti Irani and S Jaishankar also condoled the death of veteran BJP leader Jaswant Singh. Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, recalled the memories he has of working with former Union minister Jaswant Singh and called him the “perfect boss and mentor”.
