Constitution Amendment Bill to tweak women quota law defeated in Lok Sabha on Friday after division of votes. As per agency report, the Govt not to move ahead with Delimitation Bill and another Bill to amend women quota in UTs after defeat of Constitution Amendment Bill. 278 votes out of a total of 489 were cast in favour of the delimitation bill, whereas 211 were against it. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) needed 326 votes for passage of the bill.
The proposal was defeated after a division of votes, with 298 members voting against it and 230 in favour. A total of 489 MPs participated in the voting. The bill had aimed to bypass the requirement of a new Census for delimitation, a provision that has remained central to the rollout of women’s quota in legislatures.Lok Sabha adjourned for the day; to meet again on Saturday,
