West Indies beat Sri Lanka by 8 wicket in the first ODI in Antigua on Wednesday. West Indies replied confidently and partnered for 143 runs to take the match completely away from Sri Lanka.Sri Lanka were bowled out for 232 in 49 overs after electing to bat first. Evin Lewis scored 90-ball 65, while Shai Hope slammed 110 off 133. Pacer Dushmantha clean bowled both the batsmen. The rest of the job for the hosts was done by Darren Bravo (37*) and Jason Mohammed (13*).
Earliar, Sri Lanka openers Danushka Gunathilaka (55) and captain Dimuth Karunaratne (52) gave their team a solid start but that soon after their departure in the 20th and 22nd over. The 105-run partnership was broken when Karunaratne was caught and bowled by his West Indies counterpart Kieron Pollard. The match became ill-tempered when Gunathilaka was judged to have obstructed the field when he trod on the ball while Pollard was attempting to affect a run out.Pollard immediately appealed and on-field umpire Joe Wilson gave a soft signal of out before television umpire Nigel Guguid ruled that Gunathilaka had deliberately attempted to foil the run out attempt.
Angelo Matthews' run-out deteriorated the situation further for the visitors as the middle-order collapsed. Pathum Nissanka, Dinesh Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis departed one after the other. Ashen Bandara, who came in to bat at number 6, gave some relief and forged small partnerships en route his 50 to take Sri Lanka's total past 200. Bandara's wicket fell 8 balls before West Indies innings ended at 232 in 49 overs.
