Amid declining Covid cases in India, ICMR Director-General Dr Balram Bhargava has said that 92 per cent deaths in India has occurred due to unvaccinated individuals. It is evident that vaccines and the wide vaccination coverage have played a very important role in protecting hundreds of lives. The vaccine has protected the nation from a surge in the number of Covid cases, he said. The first dose of Covid vaccine is 98.9 per cent effective in fighting Covid, and if both doses are given, it is 99.3 per cent, Dr Bhargava said.
During a presser on the Covid situation in India, Luv Aggarwal, Joint Secretary of the Health Ministry on Thursday said only 0.7 per cent of the global Covid-19 cases have been reported in India. Agrawal said a sharp reduction in Covid-19 cases has been observed in the country. “On average around 11,000 Covid cases are reported on a weekly basis in India," he said. Cases from Kerala, Maharashtra and Mizoram account for 50 per cent of all Covid cases in India. Only one state has over 10,000 active cases, while there are less than 5,000 active cases in other states, he said.
