India women's hockey team missed out on a medal as they went down to the Rio Olympics gold medalist Great Britain in the bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics. But the maiden Olympic medal remained out of bounds as world no.4 Great Britain, who were gold-winners in the 2016 Rio Games, came out on top in the pulsating encounter. Great Britain started the match with their typical attacking style of play, forcing Indian defenders to push deep inside their own circle. There were two penalty corners for Britain in the first 15 minutes, one of them was saved by Savita, while the second one was a lucky escape for India, as Britain players were unable to trap the ball.
A flurry of penalty corners at the start of the fourth quarter for Great Britain allowed them to regain their lead as Grace Balsdon finally scored from a set-piece. the Britishers found the net four times through Elena Rayer (16th), Sarah Riobertson (24th), skipper Hollie Pearne-Webb (35th) and Grace Baldson (48th) to emerge winners. India played almost seven minutes with 10 players with Neha getting a yellow card, followed by a green card to Nikki Pradhan. But they still managed to keep possession for most of the quarter, and even received a penalty corner. Gurjit Kaur's dragflick, this time, was saved by Hinch. India's best performance in the Olympics was a fourth place finish in the 1980 Moscow Games.
One of India's big medal prospects Bajrang Punia has entered the semi-final of the Men's 65kg Freestyle wrestling event. Seema Bisla lost their opening bout and is out of the tournament. Golfer Aditi Ashok has continued to impress in round 3 as she tries to keep the medal hopes alive. Punia won his quarterfinal bout by fall against Morteza Ghiasi of Iran. He will take on Haji Aliyev of Azerbaijan.
