Thousands of devotees thronged the revered Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Ujjain on Monday to offer prayers and participate in the sacred Bhasma Aarti on the occasion of Somvati Amavasya, which coincided with the auspicious Purushottam Maas (Adhik Maas).Devotees began arriving at the temple in the early hours of the morning, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere as they queued for darshan of Lord Mahakaleshwar. Carrying flowers, offerings and prayer materials, pilgrims from different parts of the country gathered to seek blessings and take part in the special rituals conducted on the occasion.

Priest Akash Sharma of the Mahakaleshwar Temple said devotees from across the country had arrived to participate in the renowned Bhasma Aarti and seek divine blessings for prosperity, good health and family welfare. Special prayers were offered throughout the day for peace and the well-being of society.The Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, holds immense religious significance and attracts millions of devotees annually. Its pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, in which the deity is worshipped with sacred ash, remains one of the most distinctive and revered rituals in Hindu tradition.
Somvati Amavasya is also associated with ritual bathing, charity and ancestral worship. Many devotees observe fasts, perform havans and yajnas, recite sacred mantras, donate food and essentials to the needy, and feed animals as part of traditional observances.
