Former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu was sworn in as the 23rd Lieutenant Governor of Delhi at a ceremony held at Lok Niwas on Wednesday.The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, in the presence of Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of Delhi, and other dignitaries.

Sandhu succeeds Vinai Kumar Saxena, who has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. According to an earlier announcement from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the appointments will take effect from the dates the appointees assume charge of their respective offices.A 1988-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, Sandhu served for over three decades in key diplomatic roles. He was India’s Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 to January 2024 and was widely regarded as one of India’s most experienced diplomats on US affairs.
During his career, he held several prominent assignments, including postings at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he served as First Secretary and later as Deputy Chief of Mission. He also served as Consul General of India in Frankfurt and was part of the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations between 2005 and 2009.Sandhu also played a role in opening the Indian Embassy in Ukraine, where he headed the political and administration wing.
After retiring from the foreign service, Sandhu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2024 Indian general election and contested the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat in Punjab, though he was unsuccessful.Sandhu completed his Bachelor of Arts from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and later earned a Master of Arts degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
