Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been released from detention. The two were detained on their way to Hathras after Rahul Gandhi accused the Uttar Pradesh police of pushing him to the ground and resorting to lathi-charge.Earliar.there was high drama on the Yamuna Expressway outside Greater Noida on Thursday as Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tried to travel to Hathras and were detained by the police. They were on their way to meet the family members of the 19-year-old Dalit woman who died on Tuesday, His sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, was also accompanying him.
Ahead of the Congress leaders' visit, the UP administration enforced a ban on large gatherings and put up barricades at the borders citing the coronavirus. Even as Congress workers blocked roads and chanted slogans, the Gandhis' SUV crossed the border, but their convoy was stopped at Greater Noida. The Gandhis then got off the vehicle and started walking with scores of Congress workers.The police tried to stop them from moving ahead and later detained them under preventive custody.
Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala on Thursday said the baton charge on Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi’s cavalcade will prove to be the last nail on the Yogi government’s rule in Uttar Pradesh. Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi urged the opposition to not increase the tension through “political tourism”, and said the state government is working to punish the criminals for their “barbarism”.
