The Aam Aadmi Party leader Bhagwant Mann will take oath as the new chief minister of Punjab on March 16. Mann has alrady said that his oath-taking ceremony will not be held at Raj Bhawan, as is the custom, but Khatkarkalan in Nawanshahr district, the ancestral village of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. The Aam Aadmi Party Chief Ministerial candidate met with party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Friday. The Congress's Charanjit Channi has submitted his resignation as Punjab chief minister but he will stay on in that post till Mann is sworn in. "I have tendered my resignation to the governor," the outgoing chief minister said, "We accept the verdict of people."
The Congress was decimated in Punjab by the AAP. The party won 77 seats in the 2017 election but could only manage 18 this time after months of public hostilities and sparring between Amarinder Singh and state boss Navjot Sidhu, and later between Sidhu and Channi.
