Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday emphasised the importance of inclusive, value-based education, stating that learning must extend beyond employment and contribute to character-building, social responsibility, and nation-building.
Addressing students at the annual day ceremony of Kirori Mal College under University of Delhi, Birla said education should align with the country’s broader development vision and ensure that progress reaches the last mile. He urged the youth to actively participate in democratic processes, noting that development holds meaning only when it is inclusive.Highlighting ongoing reforms, Birla pointed to the transformative impact of the National Education Policy 2020, which promotes critical thinking, flexibility, and holistic learning. However, he stressed that academic knowledge must be complemented by strong moral values, integrity, and perseverance.
The Lok Sabha Speaker also underscored the pivotal role of teachers, describing them as “architects of society” who nurture responsible and aware citizens. He lauded Kirori Mal College for its inclusive initiatives, particularly efforts to empower visually impaired students through technology and skill development, calling it a significant step toward equitable education.Earlier, speaking at the annual day event of Maharaja Agrasen College, Birla encouraged students to contribute actively to India’s democratic and developmental journey. He said the vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047” could be realised through the innovation, commitment, and participation of the youth.
Describing India’s youth as confident and globally competitive, Birla highlighted their growing presence in innovation, research, and entrepreneurship. He urged students to aim high and work diligently towards building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, adding that increased youth participation in governance would further strengthen democratic institutions.He also praised the legacy of Maharaja Agrasen for his welfare-oriented governance rooted in equality and social harmony. Referring to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Birla said his leadership continues to inspire India’s constitutional and administrative framework.
Later, addressing students at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, Birla highlighted the importance of innovation, original thinking, and technology in a rapidly evolving world. He described “Viksit Bharat 2047” as a collective national vision to transform India into a developed, inclusive, and self-reliant nation by the centenary of Independence, while commending students for their achievements and discipline.
