Nation celebrates Girl Child Day

The National Girl Child Day was observed on Sunday, The day is celebrated every year on  January 24 for focusing attention on ensuring equal opportunities to the girl child. Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted Desh Ki Beti and the accomplishments in various fields on National Girl Child Day. In a series of tweets, Modi said the Central Government has undertaken many initiatives that focus on empowering the girl child, including access to education, better healthcare and improving gender sensitivity. He said today is also a day to specially appreciate all those working towards empowering the girl child and ensuring she leads a life of dignity and opportunity.

Home Minister Amit Shah said Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao has led to  increase in enrollment of girls in schools and unprecedented improvement in the sex ratio. He reiterated the government's commitment to make the girl child self-reliant. Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Minister for Women and Child Development said in a tweet, “On National Girl Child Day, we reiterate our commitment towards ensuring equal rights for every girl child and empowering them with opportunities. Let us take pride in our daughters and spread awareness about the importance of girl child using #DeshKiBeti”.

National Education Policy has introduced 'Gender Inclusion Fund" for targetting the development of Girl Child. inistry of Youth Affars and Sports has created an ecosystem of awareness towards women in sports and inspired a generation of young girls to actively take part in sports.There is 161% increase in women participation at the Khelo India Games from 2018 to 2020. Department of Science and Technology  has launched various career opportunities to women scientists and technologists.The ministry of skill development is also  making efforts for building conducive ecosystem for skilling women in India.

Punjab has announced January 2021 to be the "month of the girl child". The scheme Dheeiyan Di Lohri has also been launched. The Odisha government will honour individuals and organisations who have worked towards mitigating child marriage on the National Girl Child Day. Madhya Pradesh will celebrate National Girl Child Day with the theme of "Aware girl child, Able Madhya Pradesh" under the scheme Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao. From January 24 to 30, the state will also observe the National Girl Child week.
Narendra Modi Government has given a lot of emphasis on the issue of girl child's education of and declining Child Sex Ratio. In January 2015, Narendra Modi government had launched Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme with an objective to address the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio. Seeing the good progress and improving trend of sex ratio at birth in 161 implementing districts, PM Modi launched the all India expansion of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao covering all 640 districts in 2018.
