The Nagaland government has decided to digitise all old manual birth and death certificates. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has launched this campaign on Saturday in Kohima. During the launch, the Chief Minister said, the initiative will streamline service delivery, ensure efficient and accurate data management, improve citizen access to essential documents, and support the Government in making informed public policy decisions. He emphasised that timely registration of births and deaths secures the legal identity of citizens and enables access to essential services such as education, employment, Aadhaar, voter ID, and driving licences.
Rio commended the Department of Economics & Statistics for the initiative and urged citizens to register births and deaths promptly to ensure timely and effective service delivery. Following the directive of the Office of the Registrar General of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Department of Economics & Statistics introduced online registration of births and deaths across the state starting April 2022.
The move aims to streamline processes, reduce paperwork, and provide citizens with faster and more reliable services. The department also informed that only genuine certificates issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, and records available in official registers, will be digitised.
