This is an unbelievable but real tale of an orphaned baby girl who was born in Pune. Later on she became a famous all rounder of Australian Women's cricket team, captained the Aussies and was part of 4 World Cup titles in ODIs and T20Is. In recognition to her splendid career achievments, she is inducted in the ICC Hall of Fame. This is a dream journey , which any one will like to aspire in life. Yes ... this wonderful dream journey comes true in reality. She is Lisa Sthalekar. While South African cricket all rounder Jacques Kallis' s induction in ICC Hall of Fame stole the limelight, Lisa's story is one of inspiration.
This Pune girl was born on 13th Aug 1978. Her biological parents were unable to support her, so they left her at an orphanage home called Shreevatsa. The orphanage home gave her a name, Laila. As time passes on, one day a couple named Haren & Sue from Michigan, USA reached this orphange home. They had already a daughter, wanted to adopt a boy but didn't find any.
Meanwhile Sue saw Laila whose big brown eyes attracted her and she fell in love with her. It was from here that Laila's fortune changed when the US couple decided to adopt her. She was just 3 weeks old at the time of her adoption. After legal formalities completed, the couple took the little girl to USA and changed her name from Laila to Lisa. Later the couple settled down in Sydney.
Thus Lisa's journey of life shifted from Pune to begin in the backyards of Australia. She was introduced to cricket by her adopted father and started playing at backyard of her house along with him and later in nearby grounds with boys. The love for cricket never ended as she grew up and completed her studies.
Eventually, Lisa's cricketing journey began when she turns out for New South Wales. Lisa began rising up the ranks as the 21st century dawned upon the world. And finally in 2001, she made her first international debut for Australia.
She shone as an all-rounder and between 2001 and 2013 represented the Aussies in 187 games across formats. With nearly 4000 runs and over 200 wickets, Lisa was the star of the show. In a glittering career for Australian team, her consistent performances left a legacy hard to fill.
Lisa's fabulous achievments earned her the right to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. A journey that started in a distant land as a baby, is now undergoing new experiences as the years go by.
Lisa Sthalekar is now a big known face. The cricket lovers see her offering expert opinions during the IPL, or other big leagues and even in international tournaments. But she is much more than that. Lisa is an inspiration to many, she has broken stereotypes and barriers to get where she is and her life is a lesson of going past the boundary.
