Allahabad High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, facing impeachment proceedings after wads of burnt currency notes were found at his New Delhi residence, has submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, sources said on Friday. "Your Excellency, While I do not propose to burden your august office with the reasons which have constrained me to submit this missive, it is with deep anguish that I hereby tender my resignation from the office of Judge of the Hon'ble High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, with immediate effect. It has been an honour to serve in this office," the resignation letter sent to the President on April 9 said. A copy of the resignation letter has been sent to the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant.
Justice Varma was repatriated from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court after burnt wads of currency notes were found at his official residence in New Delhi on March 14 last year. The resignation happened while the inquiry ordered by the Lok Sabha Committee in the motion to remove him was underway. Last year, Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, constituted a three-member committee under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, for inquiry against Justice Varma over the alleged discovery of unaccounted cash currencies at his official residence. The members of the Committee are Justice Arvind Kumar of the Supreme Court, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of Bombay High Court and Vasudeva Acharya, Senior Advocate of the Karnataka High Court.
On March 22, 2025, the Supreme Court had formed a three-judge committee to conduct an in-house inquiry into the matter. On May 4, a panel comprising three senior judges submitted its report to then chief justice Sanjiv Khanna. In July last, the impeachment process began for the removal of Justice Varma as a judge. In August, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla set up a three-member committee to probe the charges against him. Earlier this year, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the process was underway and the government was awaiting the report of the committee.
