All rounder Ravindra Jadeja broke Kapil Dev's record during his unbeaten 175-run knock against Sri Lanka on Day 2 of the first Test of the 2-match series in Mohali on Saturday. Kapil held the record for 35 years. He had amassed 163 against Sri Lanka in Kanpur way back in December, 1986 while batting at No.7. Jadeja went past that score on Saturday in an innings that was stamped with class and authority. Jadeja remained unbeaten on a career-best 175 as India declared their first innings closed on 574 for eight against Sri Lanka.

Jadeja is one of the only three batters from the country who have a score of 150 or more while batting at 7 or below in Tests. Before Jadeja, Kapil and Rishabh Pant had reached the landmark. Jadeja also became the first player to be involved in three hundred-plus partnerships in an inning while batting at No.7 or below. The left-hander Jadeja registered three century stands – first with Pant, then with Ashwin and finally with Mohammed Shami to take India to a mammoth first innings total of 574 for 8.
