The Union ministry of home affairs on Wednesday told Parliament that protesting farmers who have been camping at the borders of Delhi for the past two and a half months have caused inconvenience to residents of the national capital as well the neighbouring states. Replying to an unstarred question, minister of state in the ministry of home affairs G Kishan Reddy added that in any agitation there is financial loss incurred by people and governments. Shiv Sena member Anil Desai had asked whether the border of Delhi had been blocked by farmers and whether it was causing inconvenience to the residents of the capital and its neighbours.
The foreign ministry on Wednesday also put out a statement warning against the "temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments" and said the protests were by "a very small section of farmers" in parts of India. "We would like to emphasise that these protests must be seen in the context of India's democratic ethos and polity, and the efforts of the Government and the concerned farmer groups to resolve the impasse," the foreign ministry said in the statement.
"Before rushing to comment on such matters, we would urge that the facts be ascertained, and a proper understanding of the issues at hand be undertaken. The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible." the statement noted.
