Economic growth, prosperity key to India’s transformation: Kwatra

India’s economic growth and pursuit of prosperity remain the central drivers of its ongoing transformation, India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, recently stated, while cautioning against a rising global trend of restrictive “control regimes.”Speaking at the New India Conference hosted by the Hudson Institute, Kwatra underscored that the “primary and core impulse of changes in India” continues to be anchored in sustained economic expansion and inclusive development.
He flagged growing concerns over increasing restrictions worldwide on access to technology, services, and knowledge, noting that such controls are becoming more widespread and are not always rooted in established global or regional norms. According to the envoy, these trends could pose challenges to growth trajectories, particularly for emerging economies like India.Highlighting India’s economic momentum, Kwatra pointed to the country’s “7 per cent-plus GDP growth,” which is being complemented by multiple parallel transformations reshaping its development path.
He identified governance reform as a key pillar of this transformation, describing it as a “total government transformation” aimed at ensuring that the benefits of growth reach all sections of society. Measures such as enhanced transparency, financial inclusion, and extending banking access to previously unbanked populations are central to this effort.
Kwatra added that governance reforms are also addressing critical areas of national resilience, including energy security, economic security, and food security, through a coordinated and outcome-driven approach. The second major transformation, he said, lies in the expansion of infrastructure—both physical and digital. He highlighted digital public infrastructure as a powerful enabler that not only facilitates the delivery of development benefits but also acts as a catalyst for further economic growth.
“The digital infrastructure space is both an enabler of the transfer of the fruits of development and a driver at the same time,” Kwatra noted, pointing to its dual role in accelerating India’s progress. The remarks come amid India’s continued efforts to position itself as a key growth engine in the global economy, even as evolving geopolitical and economic dynamics reshape international trade and technology flows.
