The BRICS Environment Ministers have adopted the New Delhi Statement which is aimed at furthering the spirit of cooperation for continuity, consolidation and consensus in the environment among the BRICS Nations.The 7th meeting of the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) Environment Ministerial was held virtually on Friday. During the meeting, India stressed on the need for taking concrete collective global actions against the global environment and climate challenge.
Chairing the meeting, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister, Bhupender Yadav said, India gives great importance to BRICS and emphasized that BRICS countries can play a very significant role in addressing the contemporary global challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, air pollution and marine plastic litter. He informed the BRICS Ministerial that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi how India is today leading by example by taking several robust steps in the field of renewable energy, sustainable habitats, creation of carbon sinks through additional forest and tree cover, transition to sustainable transport and e-mobility.
India has launched an initiative of BRICS Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Dialogue which is to facilitate an exchange of knowledge and best practices on waste management, resource efficiency and circular economy. The countries will also engage in dialogues on construction, agriculture, solar, biofuels, packaging, electronic wastes, food, water and textiles. The BRICS nations have also identified air pollution, circular economy in the context of sustainable consumption and production, combating marine plastic litter and single use plastic product pollution, forestry, including the prevention and mitigation of forest fires, and conservation of biodiversity – as some of the key areas of focus.
