Six airbags mandatory in indian vehicles, Nitin Gadkari

India is going to make a minimum of 6 airbags compulsory for car makers. The ministry of highway and road transport have issued a draft in this regard. This mandate will apply to budget to mid-range vehicles that are not equipped with rear passenger airbags, most cars on sale under Rs 20 lakh only provide rear airbags and side curtain airbags for the top-spec variants of their cars. The Ministry is now pushing to make the rear occupancy of these vehicles safer, adding four airbags for the rear occupants increasing safety and decreasing fatal and non-fatal injuries.Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday approved a Draft GSR Notification. In a tweet he said that In order to enhance the safety of the occupants in motor vehicles carrying upto 8 passengers, 6 airbags will be compulsory.

“To minimize the impact of frontal and lateral collisions to the occupants seated in both front and rear compartments, it has been decided that four additional airbags be mandated in the M1 vehicle category: two side/side torso airbags and two side curtain/tube airbags covering all outboard passengers. This is a crucial step to make motor vehicles in India safer than ever,” said the Union Minister in his tweet.
