Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday won the confidence motion in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, securing the support of 144 MLAs during the floor test held for the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government.Speaker JCD Prabhakar announced that the confidence vote resolution moved by the Chief Minister received 144 votes in favour. A total of 22 MLAs voted against the motion, while five legislators abstained.The trust vote marked the first major test for Vijay after assuming office as Chief Minister.

Ahead of the voting, Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin led a walkout by MLAs of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) from the Assembly after criticising the TVK-led government during his speech.Stalin questioned Vijay’s meeting with rebel leaders of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) earlier in the day and remarked whether the developments reflected “change” or “exchange.”
Commotion was also witnessed in the House after rebel AIADMK leader S.P. Velumani and supporting MLAs voted in favour of the confidence motion moved by the TVK government.The successful floor test strengthens Vijay’s position as Chief Minister and formally confirms the majority of the TVK-led government in the Assembly.
