Assam Election Updates: BJP crosses majority mark in early trends

The battle for Assam’s political future entered its crucial phase on Monday as counting of votes for all 126 Assembly constituencies began, with early trends indicating a strong lead for the BJP-led NDA.Initial counting data shows the NDA crossing the simple majority mark of 64 seats, putting it on course to retain power for a third consecutive term in the state. The BJP’s performance, if sustained, would reaffirm its dominance in Assam’s political landscape.

According to the Election Commission of India, the NDA was leading in 93 seats, while the Congress was ahead in 23 constituencies. Trends have been released for 121 of the 126 seats, with the BJP leading in 74 seats. Its alliance partners — Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People's Front — were ahead in 10 and nine seats, respectively. The Congress was leading in 23 seats, while its ally Raijor Dal was ahead in one constituency. The All India United Democratic Front was leading in two seats, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha were ahead in one seat each.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading from his stronghold Jalukbari seat, strengthening the ruling alliance’s momentum. In contrast, State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi is trailing behind BJP candidate Hitendranath Goswami in Jorhat.Among other key trends, Lurinjyoti Gogoi is leading in Khowang, while Akhil Gogoi is ahead in Sibsagar, a seat he represented as an Independent in the outgoing Assembly.Senior leaders of the NDA are also maintaining leads, including AGP president Atul Bora in Bokakhat and AGP working president Keshab Mahanta in Kaliabor.

Former Congress leaders Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Borah, who joined the BJP ahead of the polls, are leading in Dispur and Bihpuria constituencies, respectively.Several ministers in the Sarma Cabinet — including Ranoj Pegu, Pijush Hazarika, Ashok Singhal, Prashanta Phukan, and Bimal Borah — have established leads in Dhemaji, Jagiroad, Dhekiajuli, Dibrugarh, and Tingkhong, respectively.
The counting process began at 8 a.m., with postal ballots taken up first, followed by Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Authorities have deployed 25 companies of central armed police forces (CAPFs) to secure strongrooms and counting centres, ensuring a smooth and transparent process. Both alliances had earlier expressed confidence of crossing the majority mark. While the Sarma-led BJP had projected a tally close to 100 seats for the NDA, the Congress-led Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASM) had also claimed it could secure a similar mandate to return to power after a decade. As trends continue to firm up, attention remains on whether the early lead for the NDA will translate into a decisive victory by the end of counting later in the day.
