According to information, under Article 164(1A) of the Constitution of India, West Bengal can have a maximum of 44 ministers, including the chief minister. Following the latest expansion, the cabinet strength has risen to 41, leaving three positions vacant in the 294-member Assembly. The latest induction comes weeks after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and five other BJP legislators — Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Nisith Pramanik and Kshudiram Tudu — were sworn in as ministers on May 9 after the BJP formed the government in the state.Ahead of the cabinet expansion, Chief Minister Adhikari and West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya held discussions with the party’s central leadership in New Delhi regarding the composition of the ministry and allocation of portfolios.
Meanwhile, Bhattacharya said the new government was committed to delivering on its electoral promises and ensuring that welfare benefits reach the intended beneficiaries.
In a post on X ahead of the cabinet expansion, he wrote, “1 June, 2026 - A new beginning of hope in the lives of the state’s people.”Listing key initiatives of the government, he said, “From today, free travel service for women has been launched in the state’s government buses. At the same time, the full implementation of the ‘Annapurna Yojana’ is beginning. The administration and workers have already taken to the field to ensure that government assistance reaches the homes of the actual beneficiaries. Standing by the people, for the development of the people — the new government is committed to fulfilling its promises.”
“Keeping Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” at the forefront, the double-engine government believes — the right to development belongs to the person at the farthest end of society as well,” he said.“Honoring mothers and sisters, standing by the poor, and bringing a smile to every family’s face is our commitment. New government, new momentum — West Bengal moves forward on the path of development,” he said.
