21 killed in massive fire at Delhi Hotel

A massive fire broke out in a bed and breakfast hotel in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar on Wednesday, killing at least 21 people.17 were foreign nationals, most of them from Liberia, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Bangladesh,said Delhi Police. . DCP of South Delhi, Anant Mittal said that the fire has been successfully extinguished with the assistance of eight fire tenders. He said, through the coordinated efforts of Police, Fire Services, and other emergency responders, more than 40 persons have been rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

More than 40 people were rescued and rushed to hospital where 21 were declared brought dead. There are fears that the death toll might rise further as several of those injured are critical.The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. An official said that two water engines, two water bowsers, a quick-response vehicle and other firefighting units were sent after they received the distress call from the predominantly residential area, which is densely populated and is popular with students and young professionals.
The hotel, located in the narrow lanes of Hauz Rani, comprised about 25 rooms. It reportedly had also accommodated more than 40 guests, including foreigners who were in the national capital for medical treatment. Most of the foreign nationals seeking treatment in Delhi often stay in hotels or residential accommodation during their visits.
According to information, a bed-and-breakfast (B&B) in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar was allegedly operating far beyond its permitted capacity, with officials indicating that the establishment was running 24 rooms despite having approval for only six.Online booking platforms also showed 24 rooms available for reservation whereas the Delhi Tourism department had granted permission for only six rooms at the property under the bed-and-breakfast scheme.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives due to a fire incident. In a social media post, Modi said that authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured. Modi also announced that an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund will be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50 thousand. 
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has extended condolences over the loss of lives due to a tragic fire incident that broke out at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, on Wednesday morning.
