Amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Google on Tuesday announced that it is blocking YouTube channels of Russian state media outlets RT (earlier called Russia Today) and Sputnik in Europe "taking into account the ongoing war in Ukraine", the video-sharing platform said on Tuesday. Facebook took a similar decision on Monday by blocking content published by RT and Sputnik in the European Union. The state-backed media organisations are considered mouthpieces of Russian President Vladimir Putin's regime.
Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, we’re blocking YouTube channels connected to RT and Sputnik across Europe, effective immediately. It’ll take time for our systems to fully ramp up. Our teams continue to monitor the situation around the clock to take swift action.
