With a year to go until Election Day and two days before the next Republican primary debate, one group has emerged on the national political stage in a way they never have before in U.S. history: Indian American candidates. Two of them are former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur and commentator whose White House bid has skyrocketed his profile.Four years ago, it was then-California Sen. Kamala Harris making headlines for going on the attack at a debate -- when she challenged Joe Biden.Haley, Harris and Ramaswamy have many notable political differences. In a way, each is competing against the other in the 2024 election.
Five Republican presidential candidates took the stage on Wednesday in Miami for the third GOP primary debate. Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy had perhaps the biggest moment of the night as they sparred over the use of Tiktok, with Haley calling him "scum" after he brought up her daughter's purported use of the app.At one point, Vivek called Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis "Dick Cheney in 3-inch heels," a jab in part meant for the governor whose boots have become the subject of intrigue.Ramaswamy compared Haley's foreign policy views to those of former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney as the candidates discussed Israel's war with Hamas. He lobbed the critique at her before she could attack him, as she has done in previous debates.“Do you want a leader from a different generation, who’s going to put this country first," he asked. ''Or do you want Dick Cheney in three-inch heels." Haley told entrepreneur and fellow Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to keep her daughter “out of your voice”.“Leave my daughter out of your voice,” she said. “You’re just scum.” Ramaswamy and Haley have clashed repeatedly throughout the three debates this campaign cycle.
