Dr Arvind Kumar, Joint Secretary and Member Secretary, National Culture Fund, Ministry of Culture, on Sunday launched 'The Virasat Mitra' programme at the Delhi University Literature Festival 2025.The event, hosted at Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi, marked a significant step toward engaging youth in the preservation and promotion of India's rich cultural heritage.
The Virasat Mitra programme, initiated by Bharat Ekam Sustainable Development Foundation, aims to empower students and young professionals by fostering awareness, engagement, and active participation in heritage protection. The programme provides opportunities for hands-on experience in cultural documentation, storytelling, and heritage management.
Dr Arvind Kumar, in his address, emphasized the importance of community involvement in heritage conservation and highlighted the Ministry of Culture’s ongoing initiatives to preserve and promote India’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Dr. Arvind Kumar encouraged students to actively participate in the Virasat Mitra programme and explore the various fellowships, internships, and research opportunities available. He emphasized that preserving cultural heritage is not just a duty but an enriching experience that allows young minds to connect with their roots while contributing to national identity.
Saurabh Gautam, Director, Bharat Ekam Sustainable Development Foundation, introduced the activities of Bharat Ekam and Ekam E-Clubs, which provide students with various avenues to engage in cultural initiatives, digital heritage projects, and research.
Dr. P. Harsha Bhargavi, Author and Creative Economy Expert, provided an in-depth overview of the Virasat Mitra programme, stressing its role in bridging the gap between youth and India's heritage portion and promotion efforts. Dr Monika Choudhary, Senior Manager, National Culture Fund, Ministry Culture was also present.
The programme envisions students as friends of India's legacy—engaging in cultural outreach, protection, and promotion. After the enrolment, the student has to take the mandatory orientation programme of one credit and certified as a Virasat Mitra. Students from various colleges have enrolled to become Virasat Mitras, dedicating themselves to protecting and celebrating India's glorious past while shaping its vibrant future.
