Vice President Radhakrishnan releases Sudha Murty’s book on Parliament murals

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan released the book “Tides of Time: Bharat’s History through Murals in Parliament” authored by Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty at Samvidhan Sadan on Wednesday, April1,2026.Addressing the gathering, the Vice President said the murals in Parliament are not merely artistic works but powerful visual narratives that reflect India’s long civilizational journey. He lauded Sudha Murty for capturing the “timeless beauty and profound symbolism” of these murals and for making history accessible to people across generations. Highlighting India’s democratic legacy, V-P Radhakrishnan described Bharat as the “mother of democracy,” noting that traditions of participatory governance have existed across regions – from ancient Vaishali in the north to the Kudavolai system in the south. He said these practices reflect a deep-rooted culture of dialogue, consensus, and respect for diverse viewpoints. He also appreciated the incorporation of traditional symbols in Parliament under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the ceremonial installation of the Sengol, which he said connects modern governance with India’s civilizational heritage.
The book documents 124 mural panels in Parliament, tracing India’s history from the Indus Valley Civilization to the teachings of figures such as Maharishi Valmiki, Chanakya, Mahavira, and Gautama Buddha. It also covers key milestones including the reign of Emperor Ashoka, the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Bhakti movement, and iconic monuments like the Konark Sun Temple. Additionally, the book highlights India’s freedom struggle, featuring events such as the Dandi March and leaders including Mahatma Gandhi and Subhas Chandra Bose. The event was attended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers J. P. Nadda and Manohar Lal Khattar, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, Members of Parliament, and senior officials from both Houses of Parliament.
