Election commissioner Sushil Chandra is set to be the next Chief Election Commissioners (CEC). Chandra will replace Sunil Arora, who is demitting office this month.
Sources said that Chandra will assume charge on April 13. The order for his elevation will be issued soon, they added.
Chandra has been working as election commissioner February 14, 2019. He was appointed to the poll panel just ahead of the Lok Sabha election. He will demot office on May 14, 2022.
Arora is leaving the Election Commission after conducting polls in four states and union territory of Puducherry. Only West Bengal Assembly elections will be left when he leaves office.
Under Chandra, the Election Commission will hold assembly polls in Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Punjab. He may even announce the schedule for Uttar Pradesh elections next year.
The term of the assemblies of Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Punjab ends on various dates in March next year. The term of the Uttar Pradesh assembly ends on May 14 next year.
Chandra was the chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes before he joined the poll panel.
