Amid reports that the Centre has not placed any fresh order for Covid-19 vaccines, The government on Monday claimed as ‘incorrect’ the news report by a section of media. The Health Ministry has provided over 16 crore 54 lakh vaccine doses free of cost to States and Union Territories so far. Of this, the total consumption of doses including wastages is over 15 crore 79 lakh and more than 75 lakh vaccines doses are still available with the States and Union Territories. The Ministry has assured that more than 59 lakh 70 thousand vaccine doses will be provided to States and Union Territories within the next three day.

Soon after the government issued a statement, SII posted from its official Twitter handle that the company endorses the authenticity of the information and is also working closely with the Centre to ramp up vaccine production.

However, the Centre rebutted the report to claim that a 100% advance of Rs1,732.50 crore was released to Serum Institute of India on April 28 for 11 crore doses of Covishield vaccine during May, June and July. “As on date, against the last order of 10 crore doses for supplies of Covishield vaccine, 8.744 crore doses have been delivered till May 03.2021,” the Centre said in the statement. “Additionally, 100% advance of Rs787.5 crore (after TDS Rs. 772.50 crore) was released on 28.04.2021 to Bharat Biotech India Ltd for 5 crore Covaxin doses during May, June and July, and was received by them on April 28.2021. As on date against the last order of 2 crore doses for supplies of Covaxin vaccine, Rs 0.8813 crore doses have been delivered till May3,.2021,” it further read.
