The 73rd Plenary Session of North Eastern Council (NEC) held in Shillong, Meghalaya. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is chaired the session. While addressing the session, Shah instructed CMs on North Eastern States to shift the focus from law and order to shielding the rights of citizens, as insurgency is no longer an issue. He also directed states to build AI, machine learning and blockchain infrastructure for new generations. Also instructed to market the Northeast's potential in agarwood, foreign trade and health tourism.
Shah said the Modi govt. has ended era of violence in Northeast and transformed the region from a hotspot of disputes to a hotspot of opportunities. Today NEC is serving as an institution for strategic planning for the development of region while fulfilling people's aspirations and promoting culture, he said.
Union Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, Meghalaya Governor C.H. Vijay Shankar, State Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Union Minister of State for DoNER Sukanto Majumdar, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, and Secretary of the Ministry of DoNER Sanjay Jaju attended the meeting. Governors and Chief Ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim were also present in the meeting along with several other dignitaries.
The North Eastern Council, established under the North Eastern Council Act, 1971, serves as the apex regional planning body for the North Eastern Region. It plays a pivotal role in fostering coordinated development and strengthening cooperative federalism in the region. The NEC’s annual plenary session serves as the apex policy-making forum for the region, providing a platform for the Centre and northeastern states to jointly formulate development strategies and monitor the implementation of major projects.
