In Odisha, one devotee lost his life and several others sustained injuries in a stampede during the world-famous Rath Yatra in Puri on Thursday. The unfortunate incident occurred amid an unprecedented surge of devotees participating in the ceremonial pulling of the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra along the Grand Road. The injured were immediately evacuated by emergency response teams and shifted to nearby hospitals, where they are undergoing treatment.Officials said around 100 devotees sustained injuries or experienced health complications during the incident, with nearly 50 people admitted to hospitals for treatment.

The district administration, police, fire services and health personnel swiftly launched rescue and crowd-management operations to restore normalcy. The Jagannath Rath Yatra, one of India's largest religious congregations, draws lakhs of pilgrims from across the country and abroad every year.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed profound grief over the tragic loss of life and directed senior officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured. Reacting to the incident, former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the death and urged the state government to ensure the safety and convenience of devotees through proper crowd management.
