The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls will begin in five states, including Karnataka, from Tuesday, June 30, covering nearly 19.78 crore voters as part of the ongoing exercise to update electoral records.The house-to-house enumeration process will start in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Meghalaya and Delhi. The exercise is the third phase of SIR, which has already been launched in 12 other states over the past month.
According to information,in these five states, the enumeration will continue until July 29, while draft electoral rolls will be published on August 5. Voters and other stakeholders will get one month, until September 4, to submit claims and objections. The disposal of these claims will be completed by October 3, following which the final electoral rolls will be released on October 10.Maharashtra has the highest number of registered voters among the five states, with 9.86 crore electors as of May 12, followed by Karnataka with 5.55 crore, Jharkhand with 2.64 crore, Delhi with 1.48 crore and Meghalaya with 23.43 lakh voters.
The SIR exercise began with Bihar in June last year and has so far been completed in 13 states and Union Territories. Following the revision process, electoral rolls have been reduced by around 10.5% or 5.83 crore names.The next phases of the exercise are scheduled in Nagaland and Tripura, where SIR will begin on August 5 and September 9, respectively. The final rolls in these states are expected to be published on November 22 and December 23.In Assam, a Special Revision was conducted instead of SIR due to a pending case related to the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
