Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that barriers must be removed for trade on sea routes, which are currently being misused for piracy. Addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) high-level debate on maritime security PM Modi on Monday also said disputes must be settled peacefully and as per international law. “We need to face natural disasters and maritime threats created by non-state actors together,” The maritime environment must be safeguarded from pollution through plastics and oil spills, PM Modi added.

The meeting was the first UNSC debate to be chaired by an Indian prime minister. However, this is the eighth time that India has the rotational presidency of the top global body as a non-permanent member.
