Heavy rainfall returned to parts of Mumbai on Thursday morning as monsoon showers intensified across the city and neighbouring areas.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts. The weather department has predicted continued rainfall activity across Maharashtra in the coming days.
According to the IMD’s nowcast warning, light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and take necessary precautions amid the prevailing weather conditions.
The IMD said the Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into parts of the northeast Arabian Sea, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, covering the remaining parts of Maharashtra along with additional areas of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand as of June 24.The weather agency noted that favourable atmospheric conditions are likely to support further monsoon advancement into more parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh during the next few days.
According to agency reports, in its latest forecast for western India, the IMD predicted fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Konkan and Goa between June 24 and June 30. Madhya Maharashtra is likely to witness widespread rainfall on June 24 and again from June 26-27, while Marathwada is expected to receive similar rainfall activity between June 24 and June 26.The department has forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Konkan and Goa during June 25-26 and June 28-30, with very heavy rainfall likely at some places on June 27. Madhya Maharashtra may also experience heavy showers from June 25-27 and again on June 30.The IMD further warned of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning over Konkan and Goa until June 28. Parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada may witness thunderstorms, gusty winds and thundersqualls during the forecast period, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 70 kmph.
